The Great Kindness Challenge!
The Great Kindness Challenge is coming to NEES during the week of January 27th. This is a weeklong challenge for students to promote kindness in our school community. Each student will be given an age-appropriate checklist of ways to be kind to people in their lives. As each random act of kindness is completed, students check off the item on their lists. There will be morning announcements promoting kindness and various school activities throughout the week. On the final day, we will conduct a raffle over the announcements and celebrate students who participated and made our school a better place!

CANDY GRAM FUNDRAISER
Help us spread winter cheer in the building! Consider purchasing a lollypop candy gram for 50 cents each. Candy grams will be delivered on Friday, December 20th in honor of the first day of winter on December 21st. The fundraiser will go from December 2nd to December 19th. All proceeds will benefit the school counseling program at NEES in support of purchasing coats, backpacks, school supplies, food, etc. for NEES students and families. For more information, contact one of the school counselors.
Food Drive success!
Every year, Northeast Elementary's school counseling program hosts a food drive for families in need. It's a collaborative effort: Grace Church of the Nazarene has donated turkeys for the past two years, Tru Riderz has donated Thanksgiving-specific perishables like butter, potatoes, pies, and more, and our PIE partner at Ft. Campbell always fills in any gaps we have with gravy, stuffing, and all the fixings. NEES students, faculty, and staff also donate to the food drive and every year, we're amazed by the generosity of the Eagles' Nest!
This year, 1st grade brought in the most food so they have earned the coveted popcorn party reward! Check in with your 1st grader to hear how tasty their popcorn snack is.
Once the Thanksgiving baskets are distributed, any leftover food is being donated to Urban Ministries of Clarksville for their Loaves and Fishes food program. If you are part of the NEES family and need food support, please contact Shannon Shimer, School Counselor, at [email protected].

School Counseling News
Welcome back to another school year!
Mrs. Shimer and Mrs. Gupton are excited to see all of our returning students and meet our newest Eagles, too. We have some exciting updates:
1. We are welcoming a new Military Family Life Consultant, Brittney Turange, to our counseling staff at NEES. She will be working exclusively with our active-duty military families and those who have separated from military service within the last 180 days.
2. Our Social Learning classes will be operating within the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program's curriculum and will be implemented school-wide. We're excited to be diving into a new program that will be working to support students' social-emotional learning.
3. Just like last year, Mrs. Shimer will be working with our kindergarten students and 3rd-5th grade students. Mrs. Gupton will be working with our 1st and 2nd grade students.

SUMMER'S HERE: Let the learning continue!
On average, a student who doesn't participate in any sort of extracurricular academic work over the summer loses about two and a half MONTHS worth of math skills and two MONTHS worth of reading skills! Teachers have to re-teach their students in the beginning of the year the content that they have previously "learned." There are ways to combat this "summer slide"!
1. Read with your child for (at least) 20 minutes per day. Ask them questions about the story:
"Who was the main character?" "What was the main point of that chapter?" "How did that character feel when the other character said that to her?" and any other types of thought-provoking questions.
2. Invest in the right type of screen time.
Use educational resources online like Prodigy, Freckle, etc.
